An English, English Literature & Writing Instructor:
This is a Communicating in College class composed of 12 Japanese exchange students from Chuo University, Tokyo, Japan. -August 2023
English was not my second language. It was actually my third. My second language was Mandarin. But, I do not speak it. English eventually became my immediate second language soon after I moved to New York. Thai became my third language which I can speak, read, and write. Followed by Korean, my fourth. However, I am not able to speak it fluently. I am literate but unable to comprehend. My love of reading began with The Chronicles of Narnia. I went to Costco and bought the full series and I just devoured through the words. Within days, I finished all 7 books. Kudos to C.S. Lewis for instilling my reading passion till today.
In 2012, I began my university life at California State University of Los Angeles. Since I'm not a number and science person, I pursued English Literature for my Bachelor's. It was fascinating to learn all about The Victorian Age, Romanticism, The 17th Century, Shakespeare, The Medieval, The American and British Literature. Some classic literary authors I have read include Mary Shelley, Charlotte Bronte, Virginia Woolf, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, D.H. Lawrence, Ralph Waldo Emerson, George Elliot, Albert Camus, and many more. I obtained my Bachelor's in English Literature in 2017. Each course that I completed grew and intensified my love for English literature. Below are the courses and literary texts that I took for my English Literature Major.
ENGL 4880 Children’s Literature (e.g. Anne of Green Gables)
ENGL 4785 Postcolonial Literature and Criticism (e.g. The Plague)
ENGL 4460 The British Novel: The Eighteenth Century (e.g. Gulliver’s Travel, Robinson Crusoe)
ENGL 4461 The British Novel: The Nineteenth Century (e.g. Jane Eyre, Great Expectations)
ENGL 4462 The British Novel: The Twentieth Century (e.g. Of Mice and Men, The Great Gatsby)
ENGL 4421 Chaucer (e.g. The Canterbury Tales)
ENGL 4424 Shakespeare II (e.g. The Tempest, King Lear, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, The Merchant of Venice, Richard III, Hamlet, Antony and Cleopatra)
ENGL 4405 The Augustan Age (e.g. The Rape of the Lock)
ENGL 4406 The Romantic Age (Romantic era texts include poems, novels, and other works by William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Jane Austen, and Percy Bysshe Shelley.)
ENGL 4407 The Victorian Age (texts from the Victorian era include Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, and more.)
ENGL 4408 Modern British Literature (texts from this era include Virginia Woolf and Rudyard Kipling)
ENGL 4404 Seventeenth-Century Literature (we used the Norton Anthology and read Paradise Lost by John Milton and other texts.)
ENGL 4401 Medieval English Literature (Using The Norton Anthology of English Literature Vol. 1, we read Chaucer, Dante’s Divine Comedy, and more.)
ENGL 3300 Readings in Ancient World and Medieval British Literature (e.g. The Norton Anthology of British Literature Vol. 1-3)
ENGL 3600 Readings in American Literature (e.g. The Norton Anthology American Literature Beginnings to 1865)
In 2020, I achieved a Master's Degree in TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) at California State University of East Bay. My strong passion for reading English Literature, teaching writing, and my past struggles with learning English propelled me to pursue a teaching degree. I am eager to inspire my students to develop and improve not only their English language but also their writing skills. Have you ever heard? “The mountain is you.” Never be your own mountain; as long as you have determination, courage, and willingness, you will do just fine. With an unwavering mind, you will certainly better your English and writing skills. Below are the classes I completed for my graduate program.
